How to have Effective Friendships

14 Nov

Taking the time to nurture a lasting friendship is worth every single ounce of effort. As the years pass, you’ll find that some people will stay by your side, but many won’t. Friends that I had closer relationships with in high school, are now friends that I only take the time to write a “Happy Birthday” on their wall on Facebook. However, realize that each friendship you keep is priceless. To have a friend, you have to be a friend. To be a good friend, you have to establish a trusting friendship, be there for your friend during hard times, and deepen a friendship to make it last.

The number one piece of advice that I could give you is this:

Like many things in life, you’re going to get out of the friendship what you put in to it. I’m not saying that friendships are about you – because they’re actually the opposite. Friendship is putting the other person, as well as their needs, before yourself, but taking the time to invest and be involved in their life.

Keep your promises, be someone that your friend can depend on, be honest, listen, and know when to apologize for mistakes that you’ve made. One of the biggest things that I’ve learned by being in college, is that I cannot do life alone. I need people who are there for me to help me, encourage me, and support me along the way. I only hope to do the same for all of my friends.

PS- Shout out to my friends for being completely awesome, all the time! You know who you are (:

“Now Woody, he’s been my pal for as long as I can remember. He’s brave, like a cowboy should be. And kind, and smart. But the thing that makes Woody special, is he’ll never give up on you… ever. He’ll be there for you, no matter what.” (Andy, Toy Story 3, 2010)

How to Rant

24 Oct

“Ring by Spring” . . . I know you’re all familiar with this phrase. Especially because I attend a small Christian university, it seems like I cannot escape this evil saying. This phrase has become some what of an unstated “rule” in society. If you’re not engaged by the time that you are graduating, then you might as well just be forever alone. Right? Wrong.

What? Are you kidding me? Who even came up with this silly saying? I will be the first to tell you that I am not going to school to receive my “Mrs Degree”. This subject aggravates me to no end. It’s so strange to me how so many people become so concerned, and even consumed with the idea of finding their soul mates while at college. If that’s what going to college is for, then I guess I should probably drop out.  Too many people are so caught up in getting that engagement ring that they are missing out on what’s right in front of them.

Let me say this: if you are in college, and are in a successful relationship- that’s great! I’m so happy for you. However, to those who are just moping around campus like their lives have no meaning because they don’t have a significant other, … quit. Or to those of you who are constantly on the prowl for that person, … quit.

College is about so much more than finding the person you want to spend your life with! There are so many opportunities, experiences, and memories waiting to be made! Quit wasting your time trying to find that “perfect” person. When the time is right, that person will eventually come into your life! Remember that you are independent and you don’t need a girl/boy at your hip at all times. Do what you want to do, have fun, and quit moping around! You are not expected to succumb to this pressure. Actually, just go ahead and throw this phrase out of your head! Keep in mind, that I am not “anti-relationship”, I’m just stating one of my biggest pet-peeves. Life is too short for us to rush these major marks in our lives. Slow it down, and enjoy the ride.

Rant over.
